11.1.3 Webshop software (C)
To run a webshop, you need webshop software.
Many webshops use ready-made software in the cloud. The latter means that the software is
hosted (stored) and technically maintained by the supplier of the software. In fact, you rent
the software on a monthly basis and do not become the owner of the software. The rental
software often gives you the opportunity to set up the shop as you wish. By using templates
and adjusting colors and fonts, you can give your shop its own character. The following applies
to rental software: the higher the monthly rent, the more possibilities you have to design the
shop according to your own taste. Technical knowledge is not required. Well-known suppliers
of this type of software are:
• CCV shop
• Lightspeed
You can even start a webshop with up to 25 products at no cost.
If you want more, you pay more.
An alternative to rental software is to have a webshop built.
If you have a shop built, you are the owner of this shop and, unlike rented software, you have
complete control over the design of your shop and its look and feel. This allows you to build a
unique webshop. A webshop can be built with "open source" software or can be fully (manu-
ally) programmed. In chapter 14 we will elaborate on this.
Paying in the webshop
To allow customers to pay in a webshop, a payment module is needed. In rented web shops
this is integrated. If you have a shop built, the website builder must add this payment modu-
le himself.
The payment module ensures that payment methods such as iDEAL and credit card are possible.
