Introduction
In August 1991, the very first web page was launched. In the mid-1990s, the general public
was introduced to the Internet. The first browsers were introduced and a few years later there
were already millions of web pages. Today, there are more than 2 billion websites consisting
of a multitude of web pages. The Internet has proved to be an enduring technology that has
changed the world.
The Internet has a major impact on how we live together, how companies operate and how
we treat each other. The Internet is also the driver of new technology and has produced many
dominant companies, including Google and Facebook. All these new techno- logies requi-
re well-trained specialists. This book is about one of the specialisms connected to the online
world: online marketing.
In this book, we learn above all that online marketing is not about technology but about peo-
ple. The technology facilitates the focus on the users of the online world and the marketer is
trained to make maximum use of this.
